CAUSES OF FIBROID TUMORS
Fibroid tumors are usually benign,
non-cancerous tumors that develop during a woman’s thirties or forties. They typically occur on the uterus, but they can occasionally develop on any other organ which contains smooth muscle. Fibroid tumors are thought to affect almost 15 to 20% of women of reproductive age, while the condition occurs in 30 to 40% of women aged over 30 years old. Fibroid tumors are two to three times more likely to develop in African-American women than they are to develop in Caucasian women, but the reason for this is not clear.
The root cause of fibroid tumors is also unclear. It is thought that the levels of hormones, in particular estrogen, may govern the development of fibroid tumors. Only those women who have taken birth control pills prior to menarche have been found to have fibroid tumors. In pregnancy, when the levels of circulating estrogen are much higher than normal, fibroid tumors have been shown to rapidly increase in size. After menopause, when levels of estrogen naturally drop, a woman with pre-existing fibroid tumors can be almost certain that they will recede. Women will almost never develop new fibroid tumors after menopause.
While the medical community is almost certain that estrogen plays a role in fibroid tumor development, there is a certain level of doubt about the exact nature of this role. In many cases, women who have fibroid tumors return a blood sample which indicates that their estrogen levels are normal.
It is generally thought that fibroid tumors begin as small growths which can be so small that a microscope is needed to visualize them. In response to stimulation by estrogen, fibroids grow in size and spread throughout the muscular walls of the uterus. Although fibroids usually grow slowly throughout a woman’s reproductive years, they sometimes reach a very large size. Some fibroids become large enough to fill the entire uterus and may weigh many pounds. It is possible for a single fibroid to develop, however it is more common for a woman to have several fibroid tumors of similar size.
Even though the medical community does not know exactly what initiates the growth of fibroids, knowing that estrogen is involved in their growth is useful for treatment. Non-surgical treatment for fibroids may involve the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but commonly uses hormones which act to reduce the levels of estrogen circulating in the woman’s body.
The cause of fibroids is an area of active medical research and, as doctors and scientists learn more about fibroids, the risk factors for the condition will be more clearly understood.
